A dear friend of the PRC always says, “Give a business five years.” This is the advice she gave us as we opened the Cameron crisis pregnancy clinic/Willowbrook Women’s Center in May, 2020. She has frequently repeated these words over the past five years as we’ve experienced highs and lows in Cameron. In other words, “Don’t give up too soon! It’s really not about numbers.” Since ours is not the typical “business,” at five years . . . we’re just getting started!

When you think about the person we’re serving in our pregnancy clinics, it’s a very limited clientele. It’s not like a nail salon, a restaurant, or fitness facility that builds their business on repeat customers (although we do have repeat customers, unfortunately). No, it’s much more laser-focused than that. First, our “customer” must be a female. Second, she must be pregnant. Third, she will be looking at options because she’s not sure if she wants to continue with the pregnancy. Finally, she needs to be aware that we exist and make a phone call or send a text. Whew!

Once she’s through the first round of qualifiers, she has to be convinced that she needs an ultrasound and that Willowbrook Women’s Center can give her some answers. Next, she needs to find the day and time that works with her schedule. Once she has settled on the date and time, she needs to physically drive herself or get transportation to her first appointment. Meanwhile, the staff and volunteers at Willowbrook Women’s Center are praying and hoping that all things come together so the woman will finally arrive at the center. Do you see what must take place before an appointment can even begin?

Yet, Cameron has consistently helped over 80 women a year for the past three years. There are children living today because their mothers went to Cameron and saw them on an ultrasound. For that, we are grateful to God! But the work is never done. There will always be another “unplanned” or “unwanted” pregnancy. We know there are rural areas around Cameron where women are getting pregnant and considering abortion. If the Cameron clinic can reach even one of these women and help her to choose life, it will have been well worth it!

And here’s the “icing on the birthday cake,” so to speak: the most impressive quality of the Cameron clinic is the staff and volunteers. They are talented, compassionate, loyal, committed, Christ-loving women! Their very presence at the Cameron clinic is a witness to their persevering spirit. Our medical staff has been with us since day one, and they will probably never know how much we value them. They are rare jewels.

So, what’s next for Cameron? At the top of the wish list is a new location. Our current building has been wonderful, but like all growing businesses, at some point, you tend to outgrow your space. All in all, as long as God wants us to, we are looking forward to serving women for many more years in the Cameron area.

Happy Birthday, Cameron!
