Monday night most of America learned about a Supreme Court draft that was leaked to Politico regarding an upcoming decision on the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This is the case that has the potential to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the question of abortion legality back to the states. Over the next few hours, days, and weeks, we are going to hear an abundance of views and analysis on what a post-Roe America could look like, and one thing’s for sure: emotions will run high no matter where you stand on the issue of abortion.
You are most assuredly going to hear things like, “Now abortion will be illegal everywhere! Women will have to go back to the days of coat hangers.” The truth is abortion will still be legal. State laws will differ — some states will completely ban abortion, while others have it firmly rooted in their state constitutions and laws (See Map). Abortion will be more accessible than we may imagine. There may be some women who are desperate enough that they will try to end their pregnancy on their own, but most likely they will not use coat hangers (we pray they won’t); https://lozierinstitute.org/the-evolution-of-self-managed-abortion/. It will become more important than ever for these desperate women to find a PRC nearby.
It’s unfortunate this leak took place. It never should have happened. Only time will tell how these shenanigans will affect the outcome of this case.
The PRC team woke up this morning, arrived at work, prayed, received and made phone calls, scheduled appointments, did filing, conducted parenting classes, and basically, everything was status quo. Nothing changed in our world, and nothing will change for us if Roe is overturned, except we may actually have to work harder. Crisis pregnancy doesn’t end if Roe goes away. We are committed to serving women and meeting them where they are.
